Today’s #boardbook is a Christmas classic that LITERALLY has all the bells and whistles!  Jingle Bells, illustrated by Jill Howarth and published via Hachette Book Group (via its imprint @runningpress) sees the carol’s infamous lyrics set to colourful, charming illustrations.  This book features three excellent, authentic jingle bells as well and my small and I thoroughly enjoy shaking them as we sing with this treasure every year!  A fun and lively spin on the classic!

Recommended for all Christmas fans, newborn & up!

Today’s #picturebook in our “Week of Elly MacKay” is her latest work: Waltz of the Snowflakes via @runningpress & Hachette Books Canada.  This wordless picture book is the story of a grandmother taking her granddaughter to the Nutcracker Ballet for the first time.  The greys of winter and its cold give way to the rich colours of the magical play and we see the joyful transformation of a child watching and listening to this magical story for the first time.  Winter finishes this book in hues of violet and blue, the moon bright and yellow as grandmother and granddaughter waltz together with the snowflakes outside.

I love a good, wordless picture book as it invites storytelling with smalls in unique ways.  Wordless picture books often have several tales woven into them and I loved the gradual friendship of granddaughter with her unruly seatmate as the play captivates them.

A wonderful winter tale, just in time for the holiday season!  Recommended for smalls 3+up.  Elly MacKay has generously partnered with me to giveaway a copy of this picture book today.  Watch for my pinned facebook post to enter & have cute pictures of your smalls enjoying the autumn and winter with you ready to earn yourself a second entry in the draw!

Book three in our “Week of Elly MacKay” is Shadow Chasers via @runningpress & Hachette Books Canada.  This picture book is packed with dense forests, sunset colourscapes and the lush purples of shadows.  It follows three children trying to capture shadows as night falls but shadows cannot be caught.  They are however, always waiting for us again in the morning, ready to play and chase once more.

Light and shadow have never played more colourfully than in this wonderful lap book.  A perfect bedtime read for smalls 3+up!

Today’s #picturebook in our “Week of Elly MacKay” is Butterfly Park via @runningpress & Hachette Books Canada.  This gorgeous book is the story of a little girl moving from the country to the city. She will miss the greenery and flowers and butterflies of her old home.  Next door to her new house however, is a tiny park called Butterfly Park!  Excited, she heads in only to find there isn’t a single butterfly within.  Soon she has her entire neighbourhood engaged in pursuing butterflies to find what they love–flowers!  And when she brings flowers to Butterfly park, her neighbours join her to garden and create a lush, butterfly paradise making the little girls new house finally feel like home.

The beautiful colours and light play in this book capture the magic of childhood chases and the extraordinary magic of nature’s prettiest colours. The final garden is a gatefold so large it reached the very edges of my little studio to photograph and the inside cover comes off to reveal a poster of all the flowers needed to make your own “butterfly garden”.

A beautiful book to share with your smalls.  Recommended 2+up.  Stayed tuned for Friday when we’ve teamed up with the wonderful Elly MacKay for a giveaway!
