Today’s #boardbook is Nita’s First Signs by Kathy MacMillan, illustrated by Sara Brezzi via @raincoastbooks. This unique, pull-tab board book teaches basic sign language for you and your baby! We loved reading this simple story about manners, play and then trying out all the signs for ourselves!
This sweet book would make a lovely baby shower gift and is equally enjoyed by toddler and preschool smalls, eager to learn new things! Recommended newborn+up! A special book for families to share.
Today’s #picturebook is Bedtime For Mommy by Amy Krouse Rosenthal, illustrated by LeUyen Pham. These two talents have many wonderful books under their belts all worth checking out–this is actually an older title of theirs I discovered and really love! Published via @raincoastbooks!
Bedtime for Mommy features roles reversed as a little girl prepares her mother for bed including bath and bedtime story! We loved the hilarious switcheroo here with Mommy asking for five more minutes and multiple books and leaping onto the bed in her jammies! My own small found this concept delightful! A sweet read with lovely laughs and a cute twist ending where the little girl goes to collect “daddy” for bed next.
A wonderful bedtime read for smalls 3+up. We would LOVE to see updated versions featuring diverse types of families, hint hint! :)
Today on the blog are four titles from the upcoming Baby Animal Finger Puppet series by Yu Hsuan via @raincoastbooks: Baby Hedgehog, Baby Penguin, Baby Koala & Baby Duck.
Each board book is a compact, palm size, featuring a sturdy finger puppet that pokes through each page. The puppets are encouraged into lots of fun movements and sounds by the gentle story in each title. This classic format delights babies and kids alike and the variety of animals in this list ensures you can find just the right one(s) for your family.

Today’s #picturebook is Words and Your Heart by Kate Jane Neal via Raincoast Books. This simple, sweetly illustrated book teaches smalls about their heart (the little bit inside of them that makes them, them!) and how powerful their words are at affecting the hearts of others.
We love the gentle lesson of empathy, awareness and community impact taught in this sweet, special book. A wonderful book about the heart, for the heart, and perfect for the small valentine in your life. A lovely book for teacher’s classrooms as well. Recommended for smalls 4+up & big hearts of all ages.
Happy New Year Followers! And for those new to the blog, welcome!
This hilarious read-aloud is set in the town of Strictsville where fun is forbidden, play is prohibited and cuteness is a crime. When puppies invade this quiet town, chaos ensues as grown-ups flee the mysterious and hypnotic power of the tiny dogs. But our small hero Teddy takes a chance on the littlest puppy and changes his town forever!
Smalls will love the dramatics of the town’s many characters and the child-like fun of the glorious puppies! And grown-ups will enjoy this witty reminder to stay open to fun, friendship and all things cute.
Perfect for puppy lovers everywhere! Recommended for smalls 2.5 & up!
With Santa’s sleigh damaged just DAYS before Christmas the elves get wildly creative with sleigh ideas and have a build off! Twelves sleigh alternatives are presented to Santa, each more exciting and hilarious than the last. But, while the sleighs are amazing, are they really right for the job of quietly, magically travelling the earth to bring presents to boys and girls? Is the tried and true “classic sleigh & reindeer” ultimately the best?
And most importantly, is Santa a good driver? (spoiler: no)
This Christmas picture book is a hilarious and creative read for smalls, with illustrations that practically vroom and roar with life. Though wordy enough to qualify for smalls 4+up, it can easily be abbreviated for smalls as young as 2.5 and was an immediate favourite with my own small. For vehicle enthusiast smalls this rhyming story is rich with car, truck, ship and air terminology and equally enjoyable for grown-ups as well. A rollicking holiday treat for all!
This is a beautiful, non-fiction book about the seasonal changes of fall where Elly MacKay’s paper art brings a sense of motion to the shifting colours in nature. Leaves, apples, flowers, winds and animals getting ready to hibernate come to life on every page and smalls are gently introduced to this gorgeous season. The full text on each page is probably best for smalls age 3+up but can easily be simplified for smalls 2+up to enjoy as well.
The book finishes with instructions for doing some leaf printing crafts! A lovely bonus feature. We love this interactive book in vivid autumn colours! A perfect book to share with smalls every fall before doing some nature exploring of your own!
It’s Canadian Thanksgiving today and I can’t think of a better book to share than this picture book illustrating John Lennon’s wonderful song, Imagine. Published via @raincoastbooks Imagine is illustrated by Jean Jullien (creator of the Paris peace symbol) and uses birds to gently deliver the message of peace in John Lennon’s words.
In today’s volatile climate, we here at the blog love this read along for smalls with its simple message of togetherness, sharing, kindness and peace.
Recommended for smalls aged 3+up and bonus, you can sing it!
Today’s picture book is Trains Don’t Sleep by Andria Warmflash Rosenbaum and Deidre Gill via @raincoastbooks a rhyming story about the power and majesty of trains. Filled with two page oil paintings this book is a wonderful read aloud.
For smalls soothed by rhyming text this is a gorgeous bedtime book. For inquisitive smalls who love trains and mechanics, this book features three kinds of trains with an information page filled with terminology at the back. Changes in weather, time of day and scenery allow for lots of “things to spot” in this detailed book and descriptive language teaches new “sound” words as well.
Recommended for smalls 2.5 and up this is a lovely gift book for train lovers and rhyme lovers alike.
Peggy is a simple country chicken living a quiet, solitary life when a great gust of wind sweeps her away to the city! Charming visuals of this adorable chicken against backdrops of city life make it a lap book ripe with things to spot and discuss with your smalls. Featuring several wordless pages this book comes to life in the readers hands and smalls will relate to Peggy, a small hero in a big world. The story also has a subtle message about leaving your comfort zone and sharing your life with friends.
A gorgeous, cozy book perfect for a blanket and a rainy day! Recommended for smalls 2.5 and up.
Today’s #boardbook is Goodnight Goodnight Construction Site: Let’s Go! by Sherri Dusky Rinker, illustrated by Tom Lichtenheld via @raincoastbooks. Bright colours, bold machines, satisfying sensory shapes to each page and simple, rhyming text make this a great read for bedtime, nap time, day time, any time! Lots of call-outs for toddlers excited to try their words. This a wonderful addition to the series. Recommended 9 months and up!
Today’s picture book is an interactive masterpiece by the wonderful french artist Herve Tullet via @raincoastbooks. It’s called Say Zoop and features adorable paint drops that represent sounds. Each page encourages reader and child alike to use shape, colour, size and patterns to imitate increasingly complex sounds. Smalls will love poking the dots and letting loose with Oh’s, Ah’s and Wahoo’s with you! This book is long enough to go the distance with a child 3+up but can easily be edited for smalls 2+up who are newly verbal. My 2.5 year old LOVES this book and delights in repeat reads as he becomes an expert at remembering which dots do what. Board book covers and durable inner pages make this great for small hands.
Bonus blog call-out: Here is a book to inspire activities afterwards, from tossing yarn balls, gluing their own sound patterns or using paint to create their own Zoop book! Herve Tullet delights in unleashing the creative power of children through play!

The first title is Hedgehugs and the story behind these two hedgehogs is a delight. (Watch an interview with Steve Wilson & Lucy Tapper talking about it here).
Hedgehugs and the Hattiepillar is a Very Hungry Caterpillar with hedgehogs! Adorable and sweet, a gorgeous, colourful read for smalls aged newborn and up. These books are literally built with a mother’s love and it shines through in the viewing.
A wonderful shower gift for parents to be and a story that can grown with your child to be enjoyed for years.

Today’s board book is I’ll Never Let You Go by Smriti Prasadam-Halls & illustrated by Alison Brown via @raincoastbooks a gorgeous, rhyming story from parent to child with rich illustrations and colour palette.
I’m highlighting great baby shower gift books this April because it is baby shower season in retail (my old life) and because buying a gift for a new baby is a truly special occasion. The choice of a book is often as much for the parent as for their little one someday in the future. If your friend or family member has been waiting for a little one, if you know they are embracing every magic, love-filled lead up to their birth, this is one of the titles I recommend adding to your gift.
A gentle tour of the special bond between parent and child this book is one long, lovely hug in words and pictures.
Recommended newborn + up.
Today’s picture book is Mighty Mighty Construction Site by Sherri Dusky Rinker, illustrated by Tom Lichtenheld via @raincoastbooks & @chroniclebooks. This is a follow up to the NYT Bestselling Goodnight Goodnight Construction Site.

It is a longer read so I recommend this for smalls 4+up unless you plan to abbreviate some pages as you go. Definitely a title they can grow with filled with charm, camaraderie and a gentle sense of day to night.
