Today’s #boardbook feels perfect for a snow day: Pigs in a Blanket by Hans Wilhelm, illustrated by Erica Salcedo, via @raincoastbooks. This charming book of rhyme features “blanket flaps” little hands can open to help three pigs start their day. A lively day of fun and silly antics makes for a fun read-aloud with busy illustrations chalk-full of things to spot!
Bonus blog call-out: these pigs do everything together regardless of gender and it’s so nice to see activities like tu-tu wearing ballet normalized for everyone!
A book requested on repeat at our house. Recommended 2.5+up.
Today’s beautiful lift-the-flap #boardbooks are Peek-a-baby Farm & Peek-a-baby Ocean by Mike Orodan via @raincoastbooks. These adorable parent & baby peekaboo books are publishing in March and we love love LOVED them at our house.

These books are as lovely for a new baby as for my inquisitive four year old who enjoyed learning baby animals names and easily turning pages and flaps himself before bed. A gorgeous addition to any small’s library and sweet baby shower gifts! Recommended Newborn & Up!
This big book is packed with facts about animals and nature and each spread has twenty-eight things to count and find! Seriously, these flaps are so big they exceeded the limits of my tiny studio! A lively, sturdy book for small hands filled with rich, colourful illustrations by the talented Charlotte Milner. A great way to introduce nature through play to toddler & preschool smalls and a wonderful seek and find book for the little kid crowd! Recommended 3+up!

Spring is sprung here at the blog & we are celebrating with some DK Canada non-fiction books this month!
Today’s title is I Can Grow a Flower a visual guide to how flowers grow. We loved the simple journey from seed to flower in this colourful book as well as the fun lift-the-flaps! We seeded a vegetable garden with our small protagonist inside in our sunny window and have just started hardening it outdoors in the box each day. He’s loved watching seeds sprout just like in our book.
A great first time gardening book for smalls 1.5 & up!
Bonus blog call-out: this book comes with an adorable sunflower size growth chart to measure your smalls!
The last book in our week of DK Canada is Sophie’s Big Busy Play Book. Sophie the Giraffe has stood the test of time as a beloved baby toy and we at the blog have found the books published by DK for this character consistently wonderful. Every Sophie book is a requested favourite at our house.
Sophie’s Big Busy Play Book is a lap sized board book with lift the flaps, textures and peekaboo holes perfect for little hands (and always a fave with my small from a year old and onwards!) We love the bright colours tempered into Sophie’s soothing pastels and the wonderful themes on each two page spread. Matt the Cat is looking for little grey mouse. Each spread features a little grey tail disappearing behind a window, door or barn, as Matt searches for his friend. Behind every flap is a light activated animal sound! In bright lights these sounds work by themselves, in dimmer light a flash light works great and smalls LOVE shining a light to make a sound!
A sweet punchline finishes this bright, fun, farm animal book: Matt the Cat is hunting little grey mouse because he’s hungry–and mouse cooks him amazing meals! Chef mouse waits behind the last flap, hard at work on Matt’s breakfast.
A wonderful, lively read filled with fun farm animal sounds! Recommended 1.5+up. A great book to give as a gift!
Today’s book is My Best Pop-Up Noisy Train Book from DK Canada, a sprawling lap book filled with enormous pop-up train flaps, loads of details about trains around the world and a big red button full of fantastic train noises.
We loved this pop-up book because the pop-ups are solid, sturdy and easy to open for small hands. Each page tells a story and my 2.5 year old small enjoyed “reading” this to himself and inventing tall tales about trains going underwater and subway doors opening to get passengers. The red button is a toddler’s delight with an array of satisfying train sound effects.
For the enthusiast small, there are tons of fun facts and details about each train. Grown-ups will learn too!
Recommended 1.5 years and up.
