Todays #boardbooks are babys first Colors & babys first 123 from DK Books Canada.  This brightly coloured duo with raised textures and a mix of photographic and illustrative elements are ideally designed for baby & toddlers developing sight and touch.  High contrast and lively (we do love a good rainbow here at the blog) they are a great “grow with me” addition to your library and sweet to add to a shower gift too!  DK makes sturdy, quality books to last and these are no exception.  They are ready to endure years of little hands!

Recommended newborn +up.

Today’s #boardbook starts a 2 week blitz of wonderful DK Canada books on the blog and finishes with a 3-book giveaway on February 16th!

First up:  Colours with Ladybug, a lively, sparkly, finger-trail tale following a ladybug who collects a boot in every colour of the rainbow.  Each page explores a colour and has a finger trail your small can trace to find ladybug’s next boot.

This bright, high-contrast, texture filled book is wonderful for babies developing eyes and sense of touch.  We love rainbows here at the blog and our 3 year old protagonist asked for this book on repeat, delighted to call out colours, vocabulary and trails as he recognized them.  So we recommend this book for babies 6 months+up and toddlers too.  A book to grow with them that will be rediscovered at each stage with new things to enjoy.

Our fourth book in our “Week of Elly Mackay” is Fall Leaves, written by Loretta Holland and illustrated by Elly MacKay, published via @raincoastbooks.

This is a beautiful, non-fiction book about the seasonal changes of fall where Elly MacKay’s paper art brings a sense of motion to the shifting colours in nature.  Leaves, apples, flowers, winds and animals getting ready to hibernate come to life on every page and smalls are gently introduced to this gorgeous season. The full text on each page is probably best for smalls age 3+up but can easily be simplified for smalls 2+up to enjoy as well.

The book finishes with instructions for doing some leaf printing crafts!  A lovely bonus feature.  We love this interactive book in vivid autumn colours!  A perfect book to share with smalls every fall before doing some nature exploring of your own!

Book three in our “Week of Elly MacKay” is Shadow Chasers via @runningpress & Hachette Books Canada.  This picture book is packed with dense forests, sunset colourscapes and the lush purples of shadows.  It follows three children trying to capture shadows as night falls but shadows cannot be caught.  They are however, always waiting for us again in the morning, ready to play and chase once more.

Light and shadow have never played more colourfully than in this wonderful lap book.  A perfect bedtime read for smalls 3+up!

The last book in our week of DK Canada is Sophie’s Big Busy Play Book.  Sophie the Giraffe has stood the test of time as a beloved baby toy and we at the blog have found the books published by DK for this character consistently wonderful.  Every Sophie book is a requested favourite at our house.

Sophie’s Big Busy Play Book is a lap sized board book with lift the flaps, textures and peekaboo holes perfect for little hands (and always a fave with my small from a year old and onwards!)  We love the bright colours tempered into Sophie’s soothing pastels and the wonderful themes on each two page spread.  Quality textures are big and satisfying for curious fingers and the vocabulary satisfied my 2.5 year old who declared with delight “Look Mama, the sun is behind this cloud!”

We love this big, beautiful addition to the Sophie the Giraffe library collection.  A great gift for your smalls or for baby showers & tiny toddler birthdays too!  Recommended 6 months +up.

Check out our facebook page today, October 27th, 2017, for a giveaway!

Today’s picture book is an interactive masterpiece by the wonderful french artist Herve Tullet via @raincoastbooks.  It’s called Say Zoop and features adorable paint drops that represent sounds.  Each page encourages reader and child alike to use shape, colour, size and patterns to imitate increasingly complex sounds.  Smalls will love poking the dots and letting loose with Oh’s, Ah’s and Wahoo’s with you!  This book is long enough to go the distance with a child 3+up but can easily be edited for smalls 2+up who are newly verbal.  My 2.5 year old LOVES this book and delights in repeat reads as he becomes an expert at remembering which dots do what.  Board book covers and durable inner pages make this great for small hands.
Bonus blog call-out:  Here is a book to inspire activities afterwards, from tossing yarn balls, gluing their own sound patterns or using paint to create their own Zoop book!  Herve Tullet delights in unleashing the creative power of children through play!

Today begins my “Week of DK”.  DK Canada has been my blogs strongest supporter, a win-win relationship as I happen to think their books check every box in being perfect for smalls!

Today’s book is a new Sophie the Giraffe title:  Sophie Peekaboo Colors, a lively board book filled with flaps and touch & feel elements throughout!  Perfect for your smalls aged 6 months and onward (my 2 year old loves this one now that he’s learning the names of everything!)

Personal favourite about this title though, I’m very partial to rainbows and this book has a rainbow that OPENS to reveal Sophie, wearing a rainbow scarf.  Well done DK, well done.

Check out DK’s shop HERE to see more of their fabulous titles.
