Today’s beautiful lift-the-flap #boardbooks are Peek-a-baby Farm & Peek-a-baby Ocean by Mike Orodan via @raincoastbooks.  These adorable parent & baby peekaboo books are publishing in March and we love love LOVED them at our house.

Highlights:
 - stunning high contrast colour palettes perfect for baby’s developing eyes!

 - variety of animals (hooray for otters, octopus and donkeys!  We don’t usually see these guys!)

 - some mention of Mama & Daddy but some just animal titles allowing for a variety of parent names besides the classics!

 - each book finishing on bedtime (GLORY!) and gently illustrating some tender co-sleeping

 - chunky shaped pages and flaps great for little hands to use!

These books are as lovely for a new baby as for my inquisitive four year old who enjoyed learning baby animals names and easily turning pages and flaps himself before bed.  A gorgeous addition to any small’s library and sweet baby shower gifts!  Recommended Newborn & Up!

Today’s #picturebook is Bedtime For Mommy by Amy Krouse Rosenthal, illustrated by LeUyen Pham.  These two talents have many wonderful books under their belts all worth checking out–this is actually an older title of theirs I discovered and really love!  Published via @raincoastbooks!

Bedtime for Mommy features roles reversed as a little girl prepares her mother for bed including bath and bedtime story!  We loved the hilarious switcheroo here with Mommy asking for five more minutes and multiple books and leaping onto the bed in her jammies!  My own small found this concept delightful!  A sweet read with lovely laughs and a cute twist ending where the little girl goes to collect “daddy” for bed next.

A wonderful bedtime read for smalls 3+up.  We would LOVE to see updated versions featuring diverse types of families, hint hint! :)

Today’s #picturebook is Hooray for Birds by beloved author Lucy Cousins (a house favourite) via Penguin Random House (Candlewick Press).
We love Lucy Cousin’s bright, cheerful illustration style (fans of the Maisy books should check out her Maisy site: http://www.maisyfun.com/forchildren/).  Hooray for Birds is chalk full of fun movements and sounds for smalls to make as they spend a day being a bird!  This book was an instant hit and is fabulous for bedtime as it helps get the wiggles out and ends with a snuggle in the nest with Mama!

Picture book out now, board book version coming this September!  Recommended for smalls 2 & up and bird lovers everywhere.

Today’s #picturebook is Summer Color by Diana Murray, illustrated by Zoe Persico and published via Hachette (via their imprint Little Brown Books for Young Readers).

This beautiful picture book is brimming with lively, painted images capturing the many colours and textures of summer.  Gentle, rhythmic text follows two children on an adventure through the weather.  Nature comes to life along with the rumbling power of a summer storm.  A wondrous rainbow finishes this sweet tale.

We loved naming colours and spotting animals in this gorgeous, lap-sized picture book.  A sweet read to cuddle up with at bedtime on summer nights.  Recommended 2 & up.

Today’s #picturebook is The Story Book Knight by husband & wife author/illustrator team Helen and Thomas Docherty via @raincoastbooks
This charming read aloud follows Leo the mouse, a gentle knight who prefers books to battles.  Sent to fight a dragon and bring back glory to the family name, he instead charms every mythical beast he finds with tales of their grandeur–including the dragon.  Books bring peace to all the lands after Leo’s journey as everyone prefers reading a story to fighting and destruction.
We loved this sweet tale with its beautiful, fairy-tale inspired illustrations.  An excellent bedtime read for smalls 3+up.

Bonus blog call-out:  Spectacular end papers!  A personal fave.

Book three in our “Week of Elly MacKay” is Shadow Chasers via @runningpress & Hachette Books Canada.  This picture book is packed with dense forests, sunset colourscapes and the lush purples of shadows.  It follows three children trying to capture shadows as night falls but shadows cannot be caught.  They are however, always waiting for us again in the morning, ready to play and chase once more.

Light and shadow have never played more colourfully than in this wonderful lap book.  A perfect bedtime read for smalls 3+up!
